These neoprene sheets are approximately 51 by 83 inches (130 × 211 cm). This is just plain raw Neoprene without any material glued to either side. These plain neoprene rubber sheets are black in color.

About Neoprene Sheets

Neoprene refers to a group of synthetic rubbers that resist water, heat, oil and chemicals. The process involves the polymerization of chloroprene. Neoprene is often used as a fabric for boots, wetsuits and other outfits that need to repel water or provide good insulation.

Our neoprene rubber comes in a variety of textures and sizes and can be customized with a wide range of fabrics and colors. Our neoprene feels like a wetsuit or neoprene knee brace. The durometer/hardness of our neoprene is 4–8 on Type/Shore C. Note that a 4–8 on Type C corresponds to about 15–25 on Type A. Neoprene has a medium tensile strength, meaning it is moderately stretchy and therefore occasionally vulnerable to rips. To prevent tears, order neoprene with nylon fabric on one or both sides of the rubber.

You can order neoprene sheets in the following configurations:

Nylon Fabric
>

Nylon fabrics tend to fade in sunlight while polyester fabric doesn’t. Nylon is suitable for silk-screen printing. Since the designs will be on top of the fabric surface, any color of fabric will work well for this kind of printing. Nylon fabric has a stretch of longitude 95.56% and latitude 244.75%.

Polyester Fabric
>

Polyester-covered neoprene will generally hold up better in direct sunlight than nylon will. Print on polyester if you wish to use an “inkjet” or dye-sublimation printing process that sprays ink into the fabric. A polyester fabric surface will hold the image much better and more clearly than nylon. Since the color of the fabric will influence the color of the ink used, we recommend using a white polyester fabric to make sure the final colors are true to what you need.

Perforated Neoprene
>

Perforated neoprene is ideal for medical braces and other body applications that call for breathable material. Only the rubber itself is perforated. The nylon or polyester fabric you choose is not perforated.

Perforated neoprene
Plain Neoprene
>

There is no fabric or texture in the neoprene rubber on the “plain” side—just raw rubber. White neoprene rubber may yellow over time even with fabric over it.

Plain neoprene
Smooth Neoprene
>

This neoprene has a surface texture much smoother than plain neoprene. It’s commonly used in clothing and wetsuits.

Smooth neoprene
Textured Neoprene
>

Textured neoprene has a rougher surface on the plain rubber side, allowing it to maintain better contact with the surface that it is placed upon.

Textured neoprene
U-Loop
>

This neoprene has a fuzzy loop fabric applied that is perfect for the hook side of Velcro® to bond with. U-loop should be used in hook-and-loop applications that are not separated frequently since U-loop will wear out. It increases airflow for close-to-skin applications when facing skin.

UBL
>

A higher quality version of the U-loop neoprene. It stands for UnBreakable Loop. UBL should be used when Velcro will be frequently applied and removed. It is textured on one side.

Peel/Stick Adhesive Backing
>

This is an adhesive backing applied to neoprene. Simply peel away the paper to expose the adhesive for application.

Things to Consider Before Purchasing Neoprene

Keep it Inside
Keep it Inside

Neoprene should not be in the sun all day because heavy exposure will lead to cracking and fading. If you need a material that can withstand sunlight, we recommend applying UV protectant or using EVA closed-cell foam, which is naturally UV-resistant.

Thickness
Account for Extra Thickness

If you’re adding fabric to either or both sides of your neoprene sheet, make sure you know how much thickness the cover will add. Our thicknesses listed are for raw neoprene, so consider ordering one size thinner than you’ll need if you plan to add a layer of nylon or polyester.

Measurement Conversion Chart

Note that when we reference the thickness of neoprene, we are only counting the thickness of the neoprene rubber itself and not the additional thickness of backings like nylon, U-loop and UBL.

Frequently Asked Neoprene Questions

What are the common uses of neoprene?

Neoprene is commonly used in wetsuits, gloves, boots, and other water sports gear, as well as in industrial applications for gaskets, seals, and insulation.

Is neoprene waterproof?

Yes, neoprene has great waterproofing capabilities due to its closed-cell foam structure.

Does neoprene provide insulation against the cold?

Yes, neoprene provides some insulation against the cold because it helps retain body heat while blocking wind and water out. We recommend black colored neoprene for any use case where heat retention is a priority.

How durable is neoprene?

Neoprene is very durable and resistant to degradation from UV exposure, abrasion, and chemicals. It is also flexible and resistant to tearing, making it a popular choice for sports gear and industrial use.

Can neoprene be stretched?

Yes, neoprene is a flexible material that can be stretched and molded to fit various shapes and sizes. The amount of stretch will depend on the thickness and composition of the neoprene.

Can I machine wash neoprene?

While machine washing might be possible in some situations, it’s generally not recommended. Instead we recommend hand washing or spot cleaning with soap and water.

NSeal™ Seam Tape

NSeal™ Seam Tape
NSeal™ Seam Tape

Nseal™ seam tape is an iron-on tape that provides a waterproof and long-lasting finish to sewn or welded seams of Neoprene, Lycra and a wide variety of similar materials.

Covering the seam tape with a piece of paper is a good technique that will help shield and protect your iron and the tape. Preheat your iron, which should be set to “silk” or the lowest steam temperature without actually using the steam. Press the iron down firmly with even pressure for 10 seconds. Lift and rotate the iron; apply for another 10 seconds. Allow the bond to cool for a few minutes before testing adhesion. After the seam tape cools, check for any loose edges and use the iron again if necessary.

Seam tape provides additional strength to the seam and stretches in every direction to provide a longer-lasting bond. Available in black. Seam tape is 20 mm wide (approximately 0.79 inches).

The following video on “How to Repair a Wetsuit” gives some good instructions on different techniques of applying adhesive for neoprene repair as well as a good example of ironing on seam tape.

Neoprene Scissors

Proper scissors to cut Neoprene
Proper scissors to cut Neoprene

We supply three different models of the proper scissors to cut neoprene. Both right-handed and left-handed shears are available.

Kretzer upholstery scissors are top-quality shears made in Germany that will last and make the job go faster and easier. Wiss rubber neoprene scissors are titanium-coated to make them three times harder than steel. Industrial scissors pay for themselves with the first job you have to cut! The beautiful thing about industrial scissors is they can be re-sharpened over and over.

Pro-Tack Foam Adhesive

Spray foam glue
Pro-Tack Foam Adhesive

Our spray glue will bond layers of neoprene together. Spray both layers and allow 1–2 minutes to become dry and tacky. Then stick both layers together. Not for use on neoprene seams.
